Fly and light tackle fishing is our specialty

There was a time when “flats fishing” was a term only used when talking about Florida. But in the late 80s and early 90s, a few hearty anglers on Long Island in New York discovered that striped bass – like other predatory game fish – spent a lot of their time cruising the sand and mud flats in search of crabs, shrimp, worms and baitfish. They chased in them in the shallow-draft boats as effectively as they could. Then they discovered that the flats boat was just as effective on the east coast as it was on tropical flats. A new approach to northeast coastal fly and light tackle fishing was born.

It didn’t take long for the first few guides to apply these lessons to the Maine coast. Maine is filled with flats, and those flats hold fish all season long. Now I spend my summers (mostly) in the shallower waters of Maine’s coast, silently poling anglers in search of cruising bass and coaxing them to the boat with well placed casts, hand-tied flies, and a lot of local knowledge. 

I use top-quality gear by Tibor Reels, TFO fly rods, Shimano Twin Power reels and St. Croix spinning rods. My boat is a Hewes Light Tackle 20, capable of being poled silently in a foot of water, or racing offshore to search for big feeding schools of big striped bass. I’m equipped with safety gear that meets or exceeds all U.S. Coast Guard requirements.
